IDW Publishing is about to unleash the Star Trek story that fans didn't know they needed, and it's just a few weeks away.

Star Trek fans are currently waiting in eager anticipation of the release of IDW Publishing's Star Trek: The Last Starship #1. Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and illustrated by Adrián Bonilla, Star Trek: The Last Starship #1 is set to take place during one of the most infamous events in franchise history, The Burn, which very nearly marked the end of the United Federation of Planets and everything that Starfleet fought to protect. Star Trek: The Last Starship #1 is currently slated to arrive in comic book shops everywhere on September 24.

The official solicit synopsis for Star Trek: The Last Starship #1 reads, "For seven centuries, the United Federation of Planets brought together the entire… Then, in one terrible moment, it all crumbled in an event known as THE BURN, a Galaxy-wide disastrous event in which dilithium has gone inert, causing the detonation of every active warp core. The only ship remaining is a hack-and-slash Enterprise-Omega and its ragtag crew. Facing a true Wild West in space, the crew will need to make use of what few resources they have to uphold Starfleet’s mission of unity across the universe… and Captain Kirk will have to face a future without the Federation he loved so dearly…"

writer Jackson Lanzing previously discussed the two-part epic, noting that "The Last Starship is a new crew, a new era, and a completely different tone; our aim is to be literary, intense, innovative, and most of all, accessible." Lanzing added, "We’re bringing you into the Federation’s darkest hour through the brilliant, noir-soaked lens of artist Adrián Bonilla with zero homework required."

Star Trek: The Last Starship is just one of several new Star Trek comic book titles being released by IDW Publishing this year. Among the others is the decidedly horrifying Star Trek: Red Shirts by writer Christopher Cantwell and artist Megan Levens, which Star Trek group editor Heather Antos previously noted she wasn't sure would ever be approved for publication due to its overtly gruesome subject matter. There is also Star Trek: Voyager – Homecoming by writers Susan and Tilly Bridges and artist Ángel Hernandez, which will pick up shortly after the events of 1995's Star Trek: Voyager television series. The final new series to be revealed so far is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – The Seeds of Salvation by writer Robbie Thompson and artist Travis Mercer, which will take USS Enterprise nurse Christine Chapel for exactly the kind of pulse-pounding adventure she has been in search of, albeit in the worst way imaginable.
